Claro Labs

Welcome to Claro Labs! Here you will find unreleased, retired, prototype and unfinished programs. They might be products that we once sold, but their uptake didn't justify their continued development. They might be products we built but didn't fit what we thought people needed at the time. In any case, we don't officially sell or support them.

However, it seems a shame to have them disappear, so we offer them here for download. We don't warrant they work, but you are welcome to try them out to see if you find them useful or interesting. We would love to know what you think at support@clarosoftware.com. They all remain our programs, so please do not redistribute them: let us know if you need to.

Accessible PDF

What is it?

A simple PDF reader that lets you set the font and background colour and view a PDF in plain text.

Why don't you sell it?

We developed the technology to read Adobe Reader directly and a more powerful standalone PDF reader using a different proprietory technology.

How do I get it?

Download the Accessible PDF installer for Microsoft Windows. Unzip before trying to install.

AudioNote Web

What is it?

Record audio and have it converted to text in your Chrome browser. So you can open Chrome on Chromebook, Windows, MacOS, Android or iOS, and then record a lecture or dictate into this. The audio is recorded for download and you also get a transcript.

Why don't you sell it?

We're worried that browsers can't handle large audio recordings and the speech recognition quality isn't good enough.

How do I get it?

AudioNote Web App Google Chrome web browser only.

Background Colour Changer

What is it?

Small program that changes the background colour in Windows. This is useful on Windows 10 where that option has been removed (or hidden).

Why don't you sell it?

Windows 10 keeps changing how this works, so we think it has a high chance of not working at some point. Also, this function is in ClaroRead PC.

How do I get it?

Download the Background Colour Changer installer for Microsoft Windows.

ClaroCom Web

What is it?

A webpage version of our iOS App for people with communication difficulties (like people who have had a stroke) ClaroCom.

Why don't you sell it?

Communication Apps like ClaroCom are almost exclusively on iPads (and to a lesser degree iPhones) so we don't believe there is much market demand.

How do I get it?

ClaroCom Web App. Works in any modern browser.

Claro Drake

What is it?

Lets you dictate text to Windows 10, which will appear in the program and let you send it somewhere else.

Why don't you sell it?

We don't think it's on a level with Dragon Naturally-Speaking as it is.

How do I get it?

Download the Claro Drake installer for Microsoft Windows. Windows 10 only.

Release notes

  • Supported languages: English (UK and USA), Chinese, French, German and Spanish.
  • If you manage to install Claro Drake on Windows 7 or 8.1 and run it, you will have to close it using Task Manager.

ClaroIdeas Web / Mac / Chromebook

What is it?

A mind-mapping idea-capture study-skills tool written to be a cross-platform Web App, Chromebook App and Mac OS App.

Why don't you sell it?

We plan to!

How do I get it?

ClaroIdeas Web. For any modern browser.

ClaroIdeas Mac. Unzip and do whatever you Mac guys do with the contents.

Claro Rainbow

What is it?

A colour-changing Windows program for people with colour-blindness. It remaps every pixel on the screen to the colour range you can perceive, so things you couldn't see at all - like items in images - suddenly jump out at you. Includes colour-blindness tests.

Why don't you sell it?

People with colour-blindness have appropriate non-tech strategies - like not working with colours on Windows machines - so there is not a great demand for a piece of software. And Windows 10 has some of this kind of tech build in now.

How do I get it?

Download from the Rainbow webpage. Microsoft Windows. Marketing datasheet. Product description.

ClaroRead 365

What is it?

This is an Office Add-in that works on Word Online, Word for iOS, Word for Windows and Mac, and Word pretty much everywhere. It gives text-to-speech functionality.

Why don't you sell it?

We don't see yet a great drive for Office 365 in our markets, and this would be a lot of work and overlap with existing products (notably ClaroRead Chrome).

How do I get it?

You'll have to set it up yourself in your Office 365 corporate account.

Here is the XML manifest file you will need: https://www.clarosoftware.com/dev/ClaroRead365/Manifest/ClaroRead%20365.xml

Here is how to deploy it to your Office 365 account: Sideload Office Add-ins in Office Online for testing

Claro ScanPen Windows

What is it?

This is a Windows 10 App that lets you open an image file (JPEG, PNG, TIFF) then select any text in the image and hear it read aloud. Pretty much what our ScanPen Apps do on iOS and Android, but (because it's for a desktop, really) not using the camera.

Why don't you sell it?

There are no Windows Phones and few tablets with a decent camera, so working like ScanPen iOS made no sense. And we already have a product that lets you scan from the screen (ClaroRead). So this did not have a place in our portfolio.

How do I get it?

Windows 10 only. There are a number of steps: you have to put Windows into Development Mode, and then run a PowerShell script. Read scanpen.htm. ScanPen files (zip). Download and extract.

ClaroWord

What is it?

A self-contained self-voicing Windows word processor with speech.

Why don't you sell it?

It is a big departure from our existing Windows approach - work with standard applications like Word - and it is a LOT of development work to make a word processor, so we did not get it to a point where we felt comfortable releasing it.

How do I get it?

Download the installer for Microsoft Windows: ClaroWord.zip. Remember to unzip before you run it!

Clipboard Reader

What is it?

A small program that reads what you copy to the clipboard. Useful in conjunction with other programs that copy text to the clipboard (like scanning mice)

Why don't you sell it?

It's yet another tool, and there is already a lot in ClaroRead, and we have to work out how to integrate its speech with ClaroRead so you don't get multiple voices. We might well add it in future.

How do I get it?

Download Clipboard Reader Windows installer.

Joystick Mouse

What is it?

Lets you control the mouse pointer using a standard games controller. Good for people who can operate a controller but not a standard mouse: children may in particular have better control of a controller from playing games. Often used with an on-screen keyboard. You can control how fast the mouse pointer moves in response to joystick movement.

Why don't you sell it?

The market for computers for people with profound physical movement difficulties has mainly moved to eyegaze and tablets.

How do I get it?

Download Joystick Mouse.

Maths Reading

What is it?

This is a Maths Test that demonstrates turning MathML and other digital maths contents into text for reading aloud.

Why don't you sell it?

This is an early prototype.

One Switch Mouse

What is it?

If you have very limited movement - for example, later stages of muscular dystrophy - then it can be impossible to use a standard mouse and keyboard, or even a modern touchscreen.

One Switch Mouse lets you control the mouse pointer on a Windows machine using the most limited option possible, one single key or mouse button or customised switch or joystick button. You can move the mouse anywhere, click, double-click, right-click and even drag-to-select. Because you have control of the mouse you can use it to control other applications, like web browsers or media players, and use an on-screen keyboard to type.

Why don't you sell it?

The market for computers for people with profound physical movement difficulties has mainly moved to eyegaze and tablets.

How do I get it?

Download from the One Switch Mouse webpage.

Online ePub Reader

What is it?

Opens ePub ebook files in your web browser.

Why don't you sell it?

Oska On-Screen Keyboard Controller

What is it?

Lets you control your Windows machine with switches, joysticks, mouse scrollwheels, and anything except full use of a keyboard and mouse, because you have a significant problem with movement like degenerative motor neurone disease. It combined a powerful symbol communicator/keyboard editor and traditional (switch) and novel (mouse keypad) input mechanisms.

Why don't you sell it?

The market for computers for people with profound physical movement difficulties has mainly moved to eyegaze and tablets.

How do I get it?

Phoneme Dictionary

What is it?

Its a PWA (Progressive Web App) that reads back the phonemes of words, and if availble highlights the graphemes of the words along side it.

Why don't you sell it?

Its a poetenial future feature of ClaroRead or another application.

How do I get it?

Visit the site to try it out.

Point And Speak

What is it?

Its is a Oculus GearVR app for Android which does live OCR of what the user is looking at. The user can then have what they are looking at read back to them.

Why don't you sell it?

Poor preformance, OCR takes a while before it can recognise text. Overheats the phone during prolonged use.

How do I get it?

Dowload the apk to your Oculus Gear VR phone, install manually and try it out.

SpeakAloud

What is it?

Gives visitors to your website the ability to select any text on your website and hear it read aloud. Good for people with reading problems.

Why don't you sell it?

It's a quite different market for us, and would need much more development to be a plausible offering.

How do I get it?

Add this HTML to the head element in the web page you want to speak. Supports Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari. Zero dependencies. Uses browser's language or falls back to English:

<script src="https://www.clarosoftware.com/documents/claro-speakaloud.js"></script>

SymPrint

What is it?

Lets you create handouts and overlays for communicators. Similar to Boardmaker. Online help manual.

Why don't you sell it?

It didn't reach the market traction needed to justify its continued support and development.

How do I get it?

Download this zip file, unzip, and run SymPrint.exe: SymPrint.zip for Microsoft Windows. You may also want the templates.

Word add-in for recording
